m+a

Tonight i present you a young band from a little province of my favourite Italian region Emilia-Romagna.
So positively surprised by their sound so little Italian, so -finally- European.
Is this the sign of a new era for Italy? Not only musically speaking...maybe something is really changing....
I don't know if they will get famous...I don't know if the Italian taste will allow them to get bigger and known....but me and my scandy soul....well, we love them.

this is m+a

reminding Oppdal from (M+A) on Vimeo.

The scandinavian touch was clear since the first listening, then i found the confirmation of their trip to Norway. And that is why.

The new album is amazing, get some m+a more here

Discovering....England rulez...again.

Among the bands i saw at the transmusicals festival two of them catch my attention.
They are both pretty young bands and, not surprisingly, they come from England.
Manchester and London.
First Egyptian Hip Hop. What a horrible name!
When i read their name on the programme i thought "No way!" and i discarded them without even reading the description under the picture.
But i was wrong. Not a hint of hip hop there, but some 80's beats and atmospheres.
Funny, they are barely 18 so they weren't even there in the 80's.
I even took a picture in the media professional area.

I regret a thing, I should have told them to change their name. That hip hop it's really disturbing :)

Here's a taste.

Second, Is Tropical.
They weren't really a surprise as i knew them already. They signed with kitsuné now.
Three lovely guys from London, with such a fascinating accent. Uf.
I interviewed them, sort to say....as finally we just had a nice chat. But i'm going to post it soon anyway.

One again, after such a good weekend, and after smelling such a rocking scent, getting back to Nantes is f***** hard and frustrating.

Getting lost #2 or finding my own music taste?

Here's the new Dntel.

My life in Denmark definitely opened my music taste towards the electro sound.
Where I come from, and i am talking about the country but also the music tradition i grew up in, was 90'britpop, italian alternative rock and radiohead, Amnesiac excluded.
Let's say that at my place electronic music was for considered a bit for junkies. I guess in italy in general it is this way, as electronic is really not in our culture.
But once in dk i got addicted to certain sounds, cold and emotional at the same time. Ja, it started with the knife and some trentemøller, but now it is going down until lulu rouge.
Now, home, i am definitely a junkie, musically speaking.

That is what i meant when talking to my flatmates i said i felt weird about liking Baths, 'cause it is not my style. I don't want to close myself into a listeners' category, but those simples still sound weird at my ears, even if i can't stop listening to that album, and i love it. It's just last exemple of my music taste development, of the departure from the starting point of my bro's taste.

Favel min skat

I dont know if I am going back to Denmark anymore.

Today I grew up.
I left all my childish dreams and I became an adult.
But, how hard it is to leave this dream go?
Why does it hurt so bad?
I don’t have a boyfriend there anymore, some globetrotter friends who will likely leave soon. I don’t even have a job.

So what am I missing?
Besides magic melancholy…I guess it is all my mental fairy tale.
Finding a job is hard, and I hardly believe the possibility to get to know a highly-skilled-flirter Dane, my condicio sine qua non. (ja, maybe also to find a dane who understands latin (this was mean)) Weird that in the country of the fairy tales, people aren’t able to dream, not even for the time of a chat.

I still love that country.
But the possibilities it can offer me are not enough to make me give up for better opportunities, elsewhere.

I‘ve always been a bit Danish inside, even before getting there…so, basically, I will keep on being this way.
And if I feel like keep alive a piece of my fairy tale…

I may take a plane every now and then, if my nostalgia gets irresistible
I may decide to keep on eating oat, milk and dry grape for breakfast
I may wear a Hummer sweater

I may get drunk

I may ask my guests to take off their shoes getting in my place, and to wash dishes after the dinner I invited them to
I may light candles all over my place, arranging my new nest with Scandinavian design furniture, no matter the country I will be living in.
I may install a multiroom audio system to listen to Mikael Simpson even in my bathroom

Denmark was my charming prince.
I should have known that, as any other charming prince, it doesn’t exist.

Why Nantes is not north enough ?

E dopo la specialistica all’estero cercano master, dottorati o stage. Per fare esperienza no?

Io ero molto diversa.

Home, Hus, Haus, Casa?

Beach House

Friday night all flatmates leave thier nice maison in Nantes heading Rennes.
Tonight there's the Beach House concert.
I knew the band, i like it. I have been listening to the last album for a while, and i found it quite good without becoming a fan.
But yesterday, the concert was really, really good. Good sound, good scenario, impeccable voice.
Her voice...there's something that i can't understand. It is pretty low to be a female voice and sometime she sounds like not being able to reach fully certain highs, but at the end it works. And actually, this is mainly what makes Beach House, the Beach House.

Clapclap.

A couple of months ago I posted the video of a song called dragon's fly. I liked at the first listen, but i don't know why i didn't dig into that italian guy called Porcelain Raft.

He left Rome to move to London and he started making music. Such good music.
So, basically, for this first week of November, my soundtrack is Porcelain Raft's album. The single tip of your tongue isout the 8th.

Credevo fossimo piuttosto malvisti in Europa. Io li vedevo male gli italiani all'estero.

All'estero lo percepiscono.

Elogio al movimento -In praise of movement-

Prefazione

Conoscete il celebre monito “Mind the gap”?

Me on the Radio

I've been a bit lazy lately.
I've been to some concerts, and I've been working a lot.
PVT were pretty good, and the Scopitone festival too. Japanese Pop Star kicked ass.

Tomorrow i have my first interview on air, with the guy of the Ninja Tunes label. Frrr....

I've spent all the day writing and thinking about my thesis, and of course about Denmark.
I am in a fantastic and lively French city. it's surprisingly sunny and i think of the grey Olborg. Ja, there's something wrong with me.

Ah, last week I attended some seminars of the EAIE conference in Nantes, and I found out I would like to work at an European level. It was so interesting and international.

There's a journalists' conference in Strasburg and I think i'm going to try to participate, who knows...I might be lucky.

For the rest I am a bit stressed because of the job. I love it, but I still have to find my daily routine. I need to organize myself with no rush.

Listening to Mozart tonight.

Nostalgique océan?

Putain!!!
I just erased all my post.

I was saying...that this is the beginning of my forth week in Nantes. The second of my intense internship. We work a lot as there are so many things to learn quickly. It is pretty excited though.

As we work as much there is just little time for music and amusement in the weekend.
The Randez-vous sur l'Erdre is a 3-days festival that took place these days in the centre of the city. It was supposed to be a jazz festival, but actually what i've been listening didn't really fit my definition of jazz. Anyway, a good discovery besides the lively and cheerful atmosphere of the festival: La scène Michelet. It is a bar+ live music hall. We stayed just half an hour to attend a quite short and laid-back after party.

Today instead, we explored the coast. It was incredibly windy and freezing. Skagen-like wind, I would say.
But the sun was finally shining, and the memories of me sitting on a bench facing the ocean while listening to Caribou and reading Kundera in French made my day.

For the up-coming week, two songs as I can't really choose.
Number one.
Gold Panda, Don't you need some boost to start the week?

Number two.

Brand new discovery Weekend: End times
I love this joy division return.
(Same label as The Pains of Being Pure at Heart...How about that?)

Have a nice week.

Between a french homemade concert and some bruine

A quiet french house just outside the centre ville
. It was friday and there was a nice and greeny verdant garden.
Some chairs and old armchairs.
It was cozy.

There were some friends and an Argentinian trio.
There was a treehouse or maybe they were the Trijhaus.

What's happening up there?

Tonight I realized how many good bands come from Canada.

Arcade Fire, Caribou, Crystal Castles, Tokyo Police Club, Phatogram, Japandrois and I don't know how many others there are and I don't remember right now. It would be interesting to understand what is happening up there. What recently made the music industry, or/ and artists' creativity, explode.
Well, if I figure something out and I get to a sociological theory, I'll let you know.
For now just enjoy these two less known bands to get a full of energy and healty immaturity.

E.

How couldn't I?

I usually try not to post the same music here and on my facebook profile.
I am not even a great fan of this beachy summery 60's stream that this year seems to be so hype.
and I think Best Coast are so overrated.
But this song...this song is like a bump in my head. It is so catchy and light that listening to it I almost believe that life can be easy and sunny all the time.

Three days of good music, and less good weather
The first day was a bit cold but fine, we could fully enjoy the concerts: from the early and for me unknown Yann Tiersen to an awesome Caribou performing at 2.50 at night.

The second day started with a holy damned storm. Rain and rain and rain for about 10 hours. I was in a really punk-squat-festival mood and my equipment was really poor. So i spent the day walking around Saint Malo and waiting for the shuttle bus to the concert area under the rain, completely wet with 13 degrees...gneee...no, it was not fun at all.
A cause of this shitty bus service we also missed much of the Foals concert. I was a bit skeptic, I don't know the new album that much, and a part Spanish Sahara I wasn't impressed. But the performance was pretty good and it makes listen better the album.
You could imagine the condition of the site after all that water falling down the sky, I was so pissed off and tired that I was on the point to go to the camping to take out the wet clothes, but I wanted to see Two Doors Cinema Club so bad that i finally decided to stay. I don't regret my choice because the performance cheered me up completely after that shitty day.

I missed We Have Band at 2.30 but, well, let's say...i know what I missed.

Finally the last day.
In the morning rain again, so we went to Saint Malo, to have a good lunch, and seesighting a bit.
This time we went by car so we didn't have to deal with the **** shuttle bus.
Nice afternoon with some brandnew French friends.
Night with The National, maybe not the most suitable group for a festival, but good execution and interpretation. Love the melancholic tone of the often criticized voice of the singer. A fantasmagoric, rather softporn, show from the Flaming Lips (more show than concert maybe)

to end with an easy dancing The Rapture. I really appreciated their last number, that I found out it is called Olio and i propose here below, even if live it was much more effective.

The inception

Yesterday night i went to the ciné with my flatmate and some friends of him to watch The Inception.
It's the new movie by Christopher Nolan, the same, previously director of Batman, Memento and The Prestige. I really enjoyed the movie that, although it was pretty long (about 2,30h), flew quite well. The idea behind the story is pretty fascinating and well developed. Finally it is an action movie, even if artworks and fights are (hopefully) not the more meaningful part of the movie. The best part of the movie is infact the coté tricky-mysterious-unclear of the different levels of the story that overlap each other.
It is the kind of the movie that leaves you a bit upset and confused. The kind of movie that makes you think about what you just saw, not only because it makes you eager to unveil the trick that lies on the bottom of the plot, but also because it makes you transfer the story in your possible reality.

L'amour pour Dente? C'est ça.

I'm thinking about if i should change the language of the blog after my moving to Nantes.
Maybe, i should keep on going with english, but it would be cool turning it into french, for coherence with the country I am in.

During the last few years I've missed a bit the new Italian music scene, and, as i'm still going to be here for a few days, i'm trying to recuperate what i've missed.

Creativity and Cities

Surprisingly, thursday night i stumbled upon a high quality broadcast. As usual, it was 00.30 (apparently this is the right time for cultural programs on italian television).
It was a documentary about Berlin and its artistic environment. The creativity is definitely having a blooming season there, and it also drives a change in the urban physiognomy of the city.
So terms such as regeneration and gentrification are well known not only for architects, sociologists and urban planners, but they are perceived as crucial processes for the future of the city by large part of the population. Indeed, these changes need to be controlled to avoid areas of the city to become big niche quartiers, inaccessible to most of the population.
Besides the transformation of former popular blocks into hip and expensive residences, another problem linked to the regeneration is the drastic conceptual changes that these areas are facing. For example, for some the quartier of Prenzlauerberg, now famous as the hippest place in the city, has lost its historical roots. It was transformed in something else, with the only purpose to make it cool, without taking care of the original Berlinese spirit that once used to live there.

Here's the doc in three parts

Noise&Mess

I don't know why I didn't really fall in love with Crystal Castles at the beginning.
It was too noisy, too messy for me.
I guess it depends on the period because right now i really need more noise and more mess all around me, and, as i have to create it by myself, I need Crystal Castles, extremely.

English tendences

I'd love to be in London.

Lots of great events are coming soon, such as
Lovebox, which is actually right now, and the Field Day the 31st of July.
I'd really love to go to the second one in Victoria park to see Moderat (missed the ElectroVenice last week, damn it!) Memory Tapes, Phoenix, Caribou, Gold Panda, Panta du Prince...and some others.

The song of today is not from one of those bands above. But they are English and I found out of them, once again, thanks to the Pure Groove's newsletter.

Mesdames and Messieurs,

Victoria & Jakob

(The intro sounds like a mix between The Notwist and Passion Pit, then the riff sounds a bit mainstream, but if you feel like enjoying it without being too picky, it sounds ok)

Welcome back

It has been just few days from my coming back to Italy and I try to keep away the nostalgia of Denmark and my nordic life going to any live music show I can.
I enjoyed yesterday night concert: Criminal Jokers + Zen Circus, two bands from Tuscany.

The firsts were crazy noisy: just three guys, but plenty of energy. Two guitars and the singer-drummer who was playing standing on his feet, amazing.

However, the headliners of the night were the Zen Circus. I am currently a bit out of the Italian music scene, but I had heard they were pretty good and they "kick asses". I can't define the genre they play, it's a half-way between rock and some Italian politically-engaged songwriters.
A good concert overall, even if i didn't like some unnatural and excessive unconventional behaviours: such as some no-sense swearing, and few gross and tasteless lyrics.

Nothing lasts forever

Here I am,
struggling between boxes and back packs to fill up with clothes and memories.
Time to leave once again, to start over somewhere else.

Just a couple of days ago I was pretty sad to leave, but now, now I can't wait for the next week.

Home.
